The Civic Society
for Gravesend and Northfleet
About Urban Gravesham
Who are we?
Urban Gravesham - the Civic Society for Gravesend and Northfleet is a
newly formed group of citizens concerned and interested in the
character and environment of the urban areas of Gravesham. We have
recently joined the Civic Trust (www.civictrust.org.uk).
What do we do?
We take an interest in all new development and aim to engage the
Council, developers and other interested parties in debate about the
future of Gravesend and Northfleet. We aim to support positive changes
to the town centre but we will, where necessary, campaign against
changes that would damage the character of the area.
Urban Gravesham is very concerned about the present very large scale proposals on Gravesend's historic riverside which will affect all of the town centre of Gravesend. For more details see Heritage Quarter Scheme.
How can you get involved?
If you share our concerns we would be very pleased to hear from you. To
be a strong group which everyone listens to we need as many members as
possible. We will need some funds for postage and other matters. We
also need people who are prepared to write newsletters, produce
campaign information, deliver leaflets etc. We would be delighted if
you just want to become a member or if you wish to be involved in a
more active way.
Please feel free to contact us at info@urbangravesham.org.
Membership
Membership is £5 per year. We try to keep this fee to a
minimum but we do need funding for our campaigns. In return we will
keep you informed of major building developments in Gravesend and you
will have an opportunity to debate what is proposed for Gravesend via
our internet forum and via meetings. We will represent you views to the
Council and other major organisations and will, on your behalf,
campaign for positive change in the urban areas of Gravesend. In
particular we will seek to ensure that the historic character of
Gravesend is preserved and enhanced.

SAVE
Gravesend’s Heritage Quarter from massive
overdevelopment…
The fight against the Council and its development partner- Edinburgh
House Estates
Urban Gravesham is very concerned about the very large scale proposals
for the development of Gravesend's historic riverside and town centre.
After a massive campaign led by Urban Gravesham which gathered the
support of 1000’s of Gravesham’s citizens, the
Council turned down the planning application in late 2010. The
developer appealed this decision, but after pressure from Urnab
Gravesham withdrew the appeal. Edinburgh House are now developing new
proposals and intend to submit a new planning application in mid 2012.
We will keep you informed ....

The fight to save St
Andrew’s Gardens
After a long campaign, including fighting Gravesham Council at a Public
Enquiry, we succeeded in getting parts of the gardens designated as a
Town Green. This will protect the gardens from development.
